pardon me whilst I flush.

We have all encountered the driver on the road who is talking on their cell phone as they weave across lanes. Or the "really loud cell phone talker guy" in the restaurant. I have heard countless complaints about these cell phone users. But I want to talk about what just happened to me.

I went to the restroom, and as I approached the door, I heard someone talking. Not unusual, since women talk in the restroom all the time. However, this time, it was a woman talking on her cell phone. I have before encountered the stall-dweller who insists on answering the cell phone while they urinate or perform other bodily functions. But this time, she was just standing in the restroom talking on the cell phone. Approximately 5 steps from where she stood was the door, which led to a perfectly good hallway for cell phone conversations. Maybe she likes the acoustics of the ceramic tile-covered latrine? I don't know. But it was very awkward for me to enter the stall, tinkle, and then proceed to flush, all while she was carrying on a conversation with someone. And I happen to know that the "someone" was a male, because he was talking so loudly on the other end of the phone that I could hear him from inside the stall. So between her sentences, he heard the sounds of my pants zipper, followed by the usual tinkle, tinkle, tinkle..., thunder of the industrial-sized toilet paper roll, and finally the very loud automatic toilet flushing. That was probably a bit awkward for him.

Anyway, please hang up or step outside to carry on your cell phone conversation, and let us urinate in peace. Thank you.

(When she got off the phone, she did tell me that my sweater looked "really pretty" on me, so of course I had to forgive her after that compliment.)

  1. Maybe that is the only place she "knows" the "other" guy will not walk up and hear her conversation.

  3. It is private enough for a conversation... but I'm with you, I'd rather not know the other person is in a restroom, even though I know for a fact certain friends of mine have done that to me!! *I* also refrain from it, knowing that it can un-nerve people... me being one. I don't like people listening to me in the bathroom...

  4. I think that would have made me want to flush on purpose...over and over and over...

At school, one of our "teacher's lounges" is located in the women's bathroom. Besides two restroom stalls, there is a copier, a scantron machine, a loveseat, chair, and telephone. It amazes me that several women choose to sit in there for lengthy conversations, to EAT their meals in there, and to make telephone calls--all while people are taking care of some, sometimes stinky, business. I mean, it's the bathroom, people, come on. It stinks. It's sometimes even intimidating for those of us who have need to go. I'm not going to do my business for an audience of ears.

I have definite frustration issues with this subject.

  5. You should have made some "bathroom noises". Like not even go to the bathroom, but make all the noises to see if she'd leave.

  6. Somehow I doubt that would happen in "the men's room". Too many guys would take that as a challenge to try to drive the cell phone talker out by sound and smell :)

  7. Kristy, I'm amazed that there is a lounge in your bathroom..or bathroom in your lounge?

  8. My favourite is when they proceed with their conversation after you thundered the industrial sized toilet paper roll. So while you were taking care of business they were listening and then chose to alert you that a phone conversation is taking place in the stall beside you. Niiiice...

  10. Nice addition of Go.stats. I have noticed on mine that somebody from ozarkdodge.com (a dealership in Ozark, Mo.) has been visiting my blog regularly by googling roxy wishum. Obviously, it is somebody who knows me but they are not leaving a comment and I do not know who it is. Still, it is informative to be aware that those things are taking place.
