we wear short shorts

What do you all think about wearing shorts in the office? I know most of my blog readers aren't office workers, but you might have an opinion on this subject anyway. I've seen three of my co-workers wear knee-length shorts to work. Their outfits look professional, but the fact that they are wearing shorts stands out so much when I see them. I'm trying to decide how I feel about this new trend. I have a couple of these s0-called "city shorts" that I bought last year, but I have not even considered wearing them to work until I saw these other employees. The issue has not been addressed by our office manager, so I am assuming the trend is allowed because they keep wearing them. What do y'all think?

  1. I'm all for wearing shorts at work, especially when you have no contact with your customers except over the phone. I'm pretty sure I can sound like I'm wearing a 3-piece suit over the phone...even whilst wearing a T-shirt and shorts :)

  2. i actually like them. i think they are cute ( they don't look right on me due to my height ) but i don't see anything wrong with them. if they can look professional then i sure, why not.

  4. I've actually emailed our HR department to get her take on it... unfortunately she's out until Tuesday?!

I'm with Lindsay. If worn in an appropriate manner, I don't see why not. Now if the environment dictates something nicer, then that's another story. I don't think I'd wear it to work at a Federal job in DC or to court (like the lady said).

  5. I agree with helen and lin--if they are worn as part of an outfit and is still professional looking, I'd say "yes".

  6. I think they still look professional, but as an office manager I would say no to my employees simply because I wouldn't think it was fair for women to wear city shorts, and men to wear no shorts at all, even though they are the same length, or longer.
    Holy run on sentence!

  7. I think they're cute and could look professional, but I can see where Judy is coming from...the whole men have to do this, but woment don't...or visa versa...it's hard to know where to draw lines.

Where Kenny used to work, men had to wear shirts and ties or a polo with the school name on it. Women could wear whatever they wanted...capris, sleeveless, FLIP FLOPS...there Kenny sat in a shirt and tie. They needed some lines drawn there.

  8. Depends.
No, I am not suggesting wearing Depends. I am saying it depends on several factors. One has been mentioned several times already--what does everybody else wear? Shorts-regardless how dressy-are not appropriate where suits, ties, and business attire are the norm. The other main factor is--on whom? Sorry if it offends but some people can look professional in shorts. Others look like sausage. Some look like prostitutes. Some look like they are there to clean the building. If $70 shorts are o.k., why not $7 shorts. Most companies of any size address this in HR policy manuals. I would say "blue collar environment=good, white collar environment=bad."
Also the particular shorts in this picture are hypnotizing. That can't be good.

  9. roxy you so funny.

I think if the shorts are a dark color or pinstriped with a dark top and nice shoes, why not? thats nicer than a denim skirt. on another note...lord help the person who still wears daisy dukes, ANYWHERE. that was so mid nineties. you can stop now.

  11. I'm late on the game, but I also agree that the "fancy" ones (Dark or pin-stripe) are dressy enough for the workplace.

  12. we're not allowed at Alfatraz...our pants have to be at least half way between the knee and ankle to pass regulation. But our skirts can be shorter...go figure. doesn't make sense to me, but I don't make the rules.

  13. There seems to be no "dress code" anymore. I work for the Federal Government, and it constantly amazes me how people show up for work (AND for church too!). My husband once put this question for thought to me: "How would you dress if you were going into a court of law today?" Say you or a family member is on trial for something - how would you look while trying to make a good impression?? But yet, we roll out of bed and throw on those awful capris and flipflops and go to work! Or worse yet, to church to WORSHIP GOD!!!
