pickles & pillows

I have succombed to the cliche. I cannot get enough pickles. I have always been a big fan of pickles, but in the last week or so, it has elevated to a new level. Baby dill pickles, fried pickles, hamburger pickles, pickled okra, dill pickle chips...you name it. {Just not the sweet pickles - I normally love them but right now, ICK.} Does anyone know if you can eat TOO many pickles? So far I haven't acquired the pickles & ice cream combination, but stay tuned; you never know!

On another note, it seems that while pregnant, we are advised not to sleep on our back. I am mostly a side-sleeper, but I do sleep on my back too. {Fortunately I've never been a stomach sleeper, or I'd really be in a pickle...har har.} I'm considering getting a body pillow, and I have heard about these weird-shaped maternity pillows. Have any of you used one of these pillows? If so, what kind do you recommend? Warning: I refuse to pay $99.95 for a pillow, so if you recommend this pillow, don't bother.

  1. I have been through three pregs now and never wasted money on those things. Its called one at the head, one on each side, and one for in between the legs. ;) I'd rather spend my moolah on decor. I'm going to eat a pickle.

  2. I just used an overstuffed pillow that was firm. It worked just fine. And, you can sleep on your back now, but not later. The uterus will put too much weight on your aorta/vena cava later in pregnancy.

I couldn't eat enough tomatoes with Catalina dressing, and Red Delicious apples. I'm surprised that Kate didn't come out with a red tint.

  3. Make sure Baron takes a whiff of you before he leaves the house because your skin can start smelling like pickles if you eat too many...for real.

Dawn just bought a body pillow because she's starting to get uncomfortable. I don't think she spent $99 on it, so you could check to see if she likes hers.

I just stuffed little pillows here and there where I needed them. Actually, Kenny stuffed the pillows, while I wallered around like a beached whale.

  4. Ditto to what Ashley and Jamey said about stuffing pillows here and there. Although that u-shaped pillow does look comfy.

  5. Yep, you can totally sleep on your back. It's a potential issue in the last trimester, but my doc said that if the flow of blood became blocked by the position (meaning less blood getting to baby) that I would start feeling bad before any damage was done and naturally change position. I say sleep however you can! God's protecting that baby and you need your rest. I never had the big body pillow but I'm sure they are great. I just used about 4 regular pillows (in addition to the one under my head)!

  6. I'd say good advice from everyone. I did the pillow between my legs thing and a few here and there. You can just use regular pillows though, nothing fancy needed.

Enjoy your pickles. My thing was french fries with Emma and pimento cheese with Ella (only from a certain deli though). Those babies do weird things to you.

  7. Did Jamie just say "wallered"? :)
I use a normal pillow too, although I prefer the "throw pillow" variety...
And I'd eat all the pickles you want until you don't want them any more.... I can't get enough of anything salty either, but that craving has my eyes completely swollen when I wake up in the mornings. Niiiiiiiiice.

  8. You can sleep on your back. What doctors/books/crazy internet nazi are concerned with is your Sciatic Nerve, which runs down your spine, through your buttocks and down your right leg. You'll probably notice its exact location in your 3rd trimester (UGH!).

That's where the whole "left is best" for sleeping in your late second and third trimester come in.

For now, sleeping on your back is completely safe (unless there's an underlining medical condition that I am unaware of (which is completely possibly) and your doctor has ordered you to find another sleeping position).

I did the "I am taking 5 pillows, here's a throw pillow for you" thing and never invested in a u-shaped body pillow. I did, however, have one of those bed-length lonnnng pillows that I used to prop up my tummy and keep my knees apart when lieing on my side for blood flow and COMFORT.

    Good luck!

  10. Just to clarify, because I apparentely gave the impression that I am concerned for the safety of the baby...I should have mentioned that I do realize "they" say not to sleep on your back LATER in pregnancy, not where I am now. I am in no way concerned about sleeping on my back right now. I'm just thinking ahead to the discomfort. :-)

  11. For my 1st baby I just used a body pillow but when I was pregnant with my 2nd a pregnant friends husband found the "C" shaped pillow online somewhere for like $15, in stores its $99. Just goggle it and I'm sure you can find it cheaper. But the body pillow worked well too! And by the end you can't sleep no matter what you try so sleep how you can when you can for now!!!
